Deep Dive
1. Purpose & Value Proposition
Worldcoin’s mission is to create the world’s largest identity and financial network as a public utility. In an era of advanced AI and deepfakes, the project addresses the growing crisis of distinguishing humans from bots online. Its solution is World ID, a privacy-preserving global identity network that enables "Proof of Personhood." This credential allows users to verify their humanness to applications without revealing personal data, aiming to reduce fraud and enable fairer systems like voting or airdrops.
2. Technology & Architecture
The system relies on a physical device called the Orb. To get a World ID, an individual visits an Orb, which uses multispectral sensors to scan their iris. The device creates a unique iris code to verify uniqueness and humanness, then promptly deletes the image. This process generates a zero-knowledge proof—a cryptographic method that lets users prove they have a verified World ID without exposing the underlying data. Most user activity occurs on World Chain, a dedicated Ethereum layer-2 blockchain built for scalability.
3. Tokenomics & Governance
The WLD token has a maximum supply of 10 billion. A foundational 75% is allocated to the World Community, distributed as grants to Orb-verified individuals. The token serves a dual role: it is a governance token, giving holders a say over the protocol's future, and a utility token for actions like paying gas fees on World Chain. The contract is not upgradable, and no new tokens can be minted for 15 years after launch (Worldcoin Tokenomics).
Conclusion
Worldcoin is fundamentally an ambitious attempt to establish a global standard for proof of human identity using blockchain and biometrics, with its token designed to govern and operate within that network. Will its vision of a privacy-first, human-verified internet become essential infrastructure in the age of AI?
